the lowdown on lab-grown diamonds

How are they different? Lab-grown diamonds have come into the market place pretty rapidly because companies are able to manufacture them much more readily. Natural diamonds are millions of years old, they are a miracle of nature and they are found over 100 miles below the surface of the earth. Lab-grown diamonds are made in factories—mostly overseas—and they are made in a matter of weeks. They are made from diamond slices, so are identical on a cellular level, but are still very different and detectable to dealers.

Which diamond is better for the environment? The environmental impact of lab-grown diamonds is actually much higher than natural diamonds. The recovery of natural diamonds only requires water, which is 86% recycled, and a low-energy pressure treatment. It takes an incredible amount of energy to make a diamond in two weeks that the earth had created over millions of years…the carbon footprint of lab-grown diamonds is very large in comparison.

Which is a better investment? My biggest concern is the resale value. Natural diamonds have been around for decades and largely hold their value. If you buy a natural diamond from me, I am able to re-purchase, trade or sell it and the stone should retain close to its original value. I cannot say the same for the lab-grown diamonds. Since lab-grown diamonds have come into existence, supply and production has increased, causing prices to fall. I think they will go down further in price as supply increases. I can obtain them for my customers, but am not able offer any buy back or price guarantee on them because of the unpredictable nature of the market.

Why would I choose a lab-grown diamond? The upside of lab-grown diamonds is that they are cut beautifully and are high in color and clarity. You can purchase one for half the price of a natural diamond of the same color and clarity. If you are not wanting to pass this on to your children as an heirloom, not looking at your diamond as an investment, or don’t want to have an everlasting diamond, then lab-grown might be for you.
